Speedwell Community Farmers Market
July 6th, this Wednesday will start an experiment in Speedwell. At the corner of 21 & Cedar Springs Road will be held a a community garden sale, barter or trade. We have a great many local gardeners who usually have an overabundance of veggies. Sooooooo we’re gettin’ together to see what our neighbors are growin’ & what they have extra of. Alot of people are gowing fancy “heirloom” varieties & it will be nice to hear & see what works & what doesn’t.
We will continue this every Wednesday from 6 to 7:30ish.No strings, informal. So come see what your neighbor is growing & what pleasant surprise you could have on your dinner table. Glynnies will also have specials & COLD ice cream available.
BOS last meeting of fiscal year 2011
The BOS met on Thursday, the 30th to end out the fiscal year. We had a few taxpayers there & asked some mighty fine ?’s. Paul Turpin, from Cripple Creek is continuing to put them on the spot concerning the lodging tax accumulated over the last 10 years or so to the tune of(hold onto your hat) $811,000. That’s a whole lot of sheets being ruffled & what has been done ? Seems NO plan to utilize those resources to further business here in Wythe County has or is formulated to date. stay tuned! Could have heard a pin drop. Oh, those blank stares & Dalton backpeddling when they all turn & face him.
I asked if they had revisited the Historic Survey funding. It was obvious this was not a topic of their discussions, & Umberger sputtered that the public can decline the documenting if they wished. So, it’s a go & they’re looking to hire someone to do this. Also asked for an update on the RR Weaver proposal, wanting to know if they’d helped get that business started. Seems they’re working on possibilities, or Dalton is- meaning business as usual. And the Wythe Bland Foundation grant $$$$ that hasn’t been able to be utilized by the ambulance corps. Seems to be alot of “miscommunication” on this topic so we have to keep it on the radar.
Sam Crocket, our treasurer, handed out a parcel of papers from his office. He does alot to substanciate his work-good man that Sam.
There is a Va Long Term Care govt. program that the employees can get into-this is on their own, no county $-we need to keep an eye on this or the taxpayers will be funding that too.
They did the routine stuff, planned for their 4th of July parading & adjourned for a closed session. This is Wyth County’s very own reality show. Next meeting 7/12 @7PM.
Don’t forget the 7/11 GOP meeting. They’re going to select candidates for the Nov. elections It’s important that you be heard, we can do a whole lot better than this!
Update on Speedwell’s community Mkt.
We’re off & running!!! Lots of folks showed up & we sold out-beans,cukes,squash,lettuce, spinach, jam & syrup. UMC had a huge bakery table w lots of yummie stuff. Looks like this may be a winner!
We’re doing to continue every Wed., 6 to 7:30ish(PM) to sell, trade & barter. Come on down & visit w your neighbors, see what they’re growin’ & bring your extra veggies. People are looking for square baled hay, bring a couple down or post a sign. Might be a need for firewood too-time to think outside the box & cultivate your inituative.
